Foundation Class

Dear Parents,

Firstly, I want to wish you a warm welcome to Highfields. I am really excited about the year ahead and I know it is going to be a great year with your children.

Over the next couple of weeks, the children will start to settle down into a routine at school. Therefore, I thought I would like to take an opportunity to let you know about some things that might crop up in the next few weeks.

Celebration Assembly

On most Fridays throughout the year, Mr Dyson runs a special assembly in which the whole school attends. Every class teacher chooses at least one child from their class who has done something special during the previous week. For every child that is celebrated, their parents are invited to watch them picking up a special certificate. When your child gets celebrated, you will receive a letter normally about a week in advance.

Tapestry

Over the next month all children will be set up on ‘Tapestry’. By logging on with a secure username and password, you will be able to view all of your child’s observations, photographs and even videos from their time in Foundation at Highfields. You will receive an email telling you when a new observation or piece of work is available for you to view, this will enable you to follow your child’s progress closely and you can reflect upon their achievements together. You can also add comments so that I can find out about what activities your child really enjoyed.

Please note that each parent only has access to their own child’s learning journey although photos of your child may feature on observations for other children or as part of class observations.

PE

For this half-term, PE will be taking place on Thursdays. If you are able to bring your child’s PE kit in for Monday, they can then keep it in school and bring it back home on Thursday or Friday for washing. There will also be the odd occasion when there may be an extra PE lesson during the week.

This half-term we are focussing on fundamental movement skills such as rolling, crawling, walking, jumping, running, hopping, skipping and climbing. The children can wear either black pumps or trainers for these lessons.

Snacks

Every day the children are provided free fruit. Normally the fruit is left in the classroom for the children to choose from during the day. In the afternoon, after a break, the children are given a drink of milk.

Book Bags

In the first week, your child will receive a free book bag. This bag is for your child to keep but it is important that book bags come in everyday as we will be reading throughout the week.

As well as this letter, you will also find a new reading diary. You will see over the coming weeks, we will start to be recording in it when your child reads to us. If you can also record when your child reads to you, it will be very useful plus you can add any comments and/or questions that you would like us to look at when your child next reads in school.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will also be sending home a letter explaining how you can have access to the books we will be reading in class.

Reading Buddies

Over the next couple of weeks, the children will get to meet their Year 6 reading buddy for the first time. Once a week, the children will meet their buddy who will help them with their reading books by either reading to them or listening them to their read. This has been really successful over the years in helping the children progress.

Names

It will be really helpful if all clothes, including jumpers, coats, shoes and ties, have your child’s name in it. As a parent, I know how expensive the clothes are so it really helps us to return them to their owner when they go ‘missing’.

Lunches

All children in Reception are entitled to a free school meal every day. I have included the latest school menu on the school website.

I am really looking forward to this year, your children are an absolute delight and I hope they will enjoy their learning experiences in Reception. If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to come in and see me or email me and I will do my best to answer promptly.

Yours faithfully

Mr Fowler
