MFL - French & Spanish
Pupils at Highfields will continue learning both French and Spanish in KS2 this year. Year 6 will continue with their French as they have been doing throughout KS2, and years 3, 4 & 5 will all be learning Spanish. The children worked very well in both languages last year and I will hopefully be passing on some more of my enthusiasm for learning languages to them as we progress.
For the European Day of Languages this year we will be learning about the importance of some of the foreign languages around us and will try to learn a few words from some languages that we don't usually study. The theme for this year is "Treasure" so we will discuss things that are important to ourselves and others and will also be working on producing some beautiful new work for our display in the corridor.
Year 6 will have new penfriends in France this year and we will look forward to practising our writing skills and exchanging some introductory letters with them. We will also be sending Christmas cards and small gifts to our penfriends and have a few more Zoom calls with France, so that the children can meet their penfriends 'face to face.' This is something that they really enjoyed last year putting their knowledge into practice as we played Bingo and "Guess the Fruit".
If you are interested in learning some French, Spanish or other foreign languages with your child at home, the BBC has lots of fantastic resources, including stories, songs and games, on their website. Here is the link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/z39d7ty If you would like further information or resources in French or Spanish please let me know and I will try to help.
Please see the links below for new long term planning documents for Spanish in years 3,4 & 5 and for French in year 6. These set out in detail what your child will be learning in their foreign language classes this year. Each half term has a topic area of study and within that we will be learning and progressing with new vocabulary, phonics and grammar, increasing the children's knowledge and confidence in trying out their language skills.
